The Arcam rHead comes in a briefcase size box, which was unexpected to me. For some reason I pictured the rHead being a big beefy amplifier. It isn’t, but it is a little beefy amplifier. The rHead can be held in hand, and has the heft of a brick at a riot. The Arcam treads a more neutral yet lively middle path that is wholesome in terms of its content but never lacks life and vigour. The Arcam rHead, it also has to be said, provides cracking value for money.

Its low output impedance will make it a lot more of a general purpose headphone amplifier than the X7s. As such, the Arcam rHead gets my recommendation. That said, the Aune is an attractively designed and powerful amplifier. John Grandberg (@project86) put the rHead on InnerFidelity's Wall of Fame. The Master Switch listed it as one of the best headphone amps of 2018 while stating, "we’re going to go on record and say that this might be one of the best solid state amps we’ve heard." And yet, for all this detail and definition, the rHead never once sounds fatiguing or wearing. As a reviewer, if there’s a downside to the rHead, it’s that it would suspend my critical faculties in headphone reviewing, because most headphones get a free upgrade thanks to the Arcam’s deft, insightful, and attractive sound. Overall, I would say this headphone amplifier is certainly excellent for it's price.
